Aw, I really enjoyed the Beijing metro when I was there – it was ridiculously cheap!
Though I agree, it was kinda cramped. And if people kept staring and taking pictures, it was hard to move to avoid attention *sigh*
With regard to the last one, in the US utility poles are often made of wood and power lines often run by and through trees, too.
