You know how people say: Hey, I’m totally fine with eating only fruits as being my only form of sugar? I can eat an apple and have my sweet tooth satiated (Meg I am looking at you!) 🙂
Well that doesn’t seem to work on me, and it might by psychological, but I’m not so sure any longer.
I know fruit sugars and refined white or brown sugar are not the same things, but damn it, sometimes you want a disgusting, bad for you refined sugar treat.
At the start of my sugar-lowering life changing process, I was craving something sweet, so I decided: Hey I bought all of these damn apples on sales let’s eat one to stop the sugar craving.
I ate one. Then two. Then three.
And finally I was full after my fifth apple but my body was still craving sugar!
Clearly whatever I was doing, was not working. It wasn’t until I popped a Werther’s toffee in my mouth that I felt a sigh of relief. The sugar craving was gone.
So apples? Yeah.. not such a great substitute when what you want is a dark chocolate raspberry swirled fudge cake.
Where am I going with this? I’m basically saying it’s taking time and I am slowly cutting down on sugar, but it was definitely a struggle at the start.
I’m doing a lot better now, but it was a struggle to wean off that sugar!
you do realize you have to go thru a detox period right? 🙂 i went cold turkey 2 years ago…no white stuff, no sugars, no carbs, no nothing. the detox period was hard but freeing. once you are done w/ it, you don’t crave sugar anymore. it’s amazing. 🙂
i love the blog! even though i’m not in “HEAVY” debt, i still have a little bit that hangs over my head. this is inspirational. 🙂 thank you!
There are times I have the strongest cravings but I can’t pinpoint the exact food that I want and I eat a hole in the pantry trying to figure it out. It makes me feel like a crazy person 🙂 but I’m pretty sure it’s usually because I want two bites of cake.
When you have just a general craving for sweets (as opposed to “must have a Snickers now!” specific craving) it means your body needs protein. Next time add a little cheese or PB to your apple…you’ll be surprised how well it works!
When I was eating lots of carbs (white rice, bread, noodles etc), I hated sugary treats. Then I went on a low carb diet and suddenly had all sorts of sugar cravings. I’m eating more carbs now and I don’t want sugar as much again. So…eat more rice?
I find with things like tea and oatmeal, if I add milk but no sugar it seems sweet enough. At first when I made myself apple cinnamon oatmeal with no sugar, I thought it wasn’t sweet enough but now I’m used to it. I sometimes eat too much sugar (567 calories worth of hazelnut milk chocolate… probably enough sugar to give me a headache tonight) but I don’t feel as good after I eat it now.
I’m doing a 30 day challenge that involves only sugar from some fruits. Sugar is a roller coaster for me. When I first started the challenge I tried to limit my fruit intake to some berries and an apple each day. When you remove sugar from your diet you actually go through withdrawal. It is addictive. And it is in everything. Seriously. Almost everything prepackaged has sugar in it. The bad kind. The white stuff.
After finishing the withdrawal I am feeling awesome. I now eat an apple and one is enough. My diet is meat, vegetables, some fruit and nuts. I also eat a lot of good fat from coconut, avocado and olive oil.
It can be a struggle at first to cut sugar out of your diet but take it from me, a total ex-sugar junkie ~ it can be done! It took me a long time of cutting down and then cutting out but now I can’t stand to eat anything that’s too sweet and fruit now has the power to satiate the sugar cravings. Taste buds change. Weird.
Haha. I am a non-fruit sugar craver myself too. Sometimes a really good piece of fruit will work but I love some really great dark chocolate. It is always satisfying.
Wow I’m starting to think there’s something wrong with me for never craving “that” kind of sugar. But then again, my vice is caffeine. It’s so bad that I actually get withdrawals; actual physical withdrawal symptoms!
Try a cheesecake instead. There is nothing wrong with calories, as long as got channel to dispose them.
