LA MAISON DU MACARON
MACARONS! π From La Maison du Macaron in Montreal. (This is over a period of about a month. Yes, I’m addicted. And no, I haven’t had any since mid-March after sharing with some friends in Toronto).
I got a nice range of their flavours..
This was my first box.
- Peppered Mango — my favourite
- Speculoos & Rose Petal
- Milk Chocolate — delicious
- White Chocolate– delicious
- Pistachio
- Caramel with Fleur de Sel — quite good too
- Coconut
- Vanilla — Too sweet
- Hazelnut
- Lemon — I find it weird, too faux lemony or something
Here’s that heart shaped Speculoos* and Rose Petal flavoured heart shaped macaron.
It wasn’t that great.
*Speculoos/Speculaas is this amazing flavoured cookie from Belgium.
This was my second box. I only got the three I liked:
- White chocolate
- Milk chocolate
- Peppered Mango
Look that beauty up close!
Then I got a third mini box:
- Caramel fleur de sel
- Banana and Chocolate
- Banana and Lime
And here’s my almost last box of just milk chocolate and peppered mango (YUM!)
CREPES
BF makes awesome crepes. He has a simple mixture of flour, milk and some salt, and he uses a regular ol’ frying pan. Kind of like making pancakes, but with a lighter mixture.
He always buys a little can of hazelnut spread which is slightly sweet but not overly so.
Nommy deliciousness.
Recipe:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
What he does is lightly oil the pan with a paper towel dipped in oil, and then take a ladle of the mixture and coats the pan.
After a little while, he lifts up one side and flips it.
A crepe pan makes this super easy because you just flip the double-sided pan to the other side.
You want the bottom of the crepe to be a light golden brown like this before you flip.
We like to do a little white sugar on it, or spread some hazelnut paste.
Wrap it like this, and enjoy.
RED VELVET CHEESECAKE
$8 at PC stores (for the whole cake!).
YUMMY. Red Velvet doesn’t taste like anything special. It’s just vanilla, and the texture is velvety.
A slice of perfection. I got about 6 slices out of the cake.
LEMON ZEST BISCOTTI

GREEN TEA SWISS ROLL
I hated it. No green tea flavour, too much cream.. gross.
I miss Toronto’s swiss rolls.
JAPANESE CHEESECAKE
Light and delicious. BF makes a KILLER Japanese cheesecake so I was pleased with it only as a substitute… but I clearly prefer his baking.
LEMON CUSTARD CAKE
It’s more of a bread, less of a cake but it was delicious. All the custard was at the top of the “cake” so I had to eat it length-wise.
BRIOCHE
Flaky Brioche. Not as good as in Paris and I wasn’t excited.
I ate it anyway π
My tummy is grumbling now. I love macarons so much. I think the fact that they are hard to get a hold of makes them even more special to me.
You need to have a disclaimer before reading this post. Do not read when you are hungry or craving something sweet.
Everything looks so delicious. Cool.
Ps – I don’t get your new comment system…. why cant I sign in as my “1/2 dozen”?
I’m sorry!
I had to switch to Disqus because IntenseDebate was NOT working on my blog after they updated or whatever they did. It won’t let you sign in any more, it’s another profile you’ll have to set up π
Oh Em Gee!! You literally just killed me with jealousy!! Yummy! *sigh* I so miss being able to eat stuff like that…. oh well, can’t win ’em all! π
It’s a good thing I live nowhere near Montreal, I could see a box of those babies disappearing way to quickly in my house. Nom. I think I should skip dinner tonight and go straight for dessert, no?
Macarons have almond flour in it. I think that suffices for ‘healthy’ π
Red Velvet looks amazing. I used to be a chocolate fan, but Red Velvet cheesecake is now my favorite go-to.
The red colour used to make me cringe. Now I kind of enjoy it π
You are killing me with this post! Add similar stuff/stores you like in Toronto so I can give it a try and not simply drool over these pic π
I don’t know similar stores/stuff in Toronto! π Not yet anyway. I’d have to go back and really explore the list of options.
OMG, yummmmmmmmmmmmm.
Mmmmm now I have a hankering for something warm and custardy but never mind that ~ those macarons look heavenly!
They are definitely heavenly. I’m going back for a box in April as a treat for finishing my taxes. (Both business AND personal)
When I first saw the contents of the first box, I was already wondering about the speculaas & rose petal macaron, but I see you weren’t thrilled about it. I can’t quite imagine those two flavours together, because speculaas tastes more spicy and not at all sweet. And I can’t remember ever seeing speculaas being paired up with flavours like rose petal here in the Netherlands.
Well I think rose petal is a bad idea for snacks. I don’t taste it strongly in macarons or pastries (Laduree in France also had a rose petal macaron which I hated).
They must have been using rose water, but I think it needs much more ROSE in it and they should have used rose SYRUP mixed with water to make it super concentrated.
Unfortunately, rose syrup is very hard to find here in Canada.
Speculaas is an awesome cookie. It’s also from the Netherlands (weird cuz Belgium and the Netherlands are so far apart, right?). I just picked up some from the Dutch store. Usually they’re in windmill shapes. But I think the best speculaas is when we make it home-made because we actually them soft and square instead of the normal hard windmill.
I have never had it, but I have a Belgian friend who’s mother sent him a TUB of Speculaas PASTE!
It’s like a nutella spread, but.. it looked so good.
I just got fat reading your post, lol! Those Macarons look like Alfajores. Have you heard of those? It’s these cookies with dulce de leche/caramel sauce in the middle covered with chocolate. Heavenly doesn’t even begin to describe them…
I have never heard of Alfajores but now I’ll look out for them π
Oooo.. all these dessert look so YUMMY!!!! I love red velvet cake…but with cream cheese….:)
yum! That milk chocolate one I tried was tasty π Banana chocolate sounds like it could be tasty. Or if they made it, raspberry white chocolate would be tasty, or mint chocolate… (and yes I could continue to list tasty sounding combos! haha)
Wow. I just reread what I posted. Overuse of “tasty” much?
Can’t hide the truth Emma. Tasty is as tasty does.
The mango pepper sounded weird to you, but I assure you it was the FAVOURITE of everyone else. No one I’ve ever given it too (who has liked mango) hated it. π If only i could have convinced you to eat it.
I wouldn’t say I had a sweet tooth – I can easily pass on most desserts, but your photos had my mouth watering!
I have a sweet, savoury and salty tooth. It can’t make up it’s mind, it’s just hungry all the time.
YUM! I’ve got to check out this japanese cheesecake!
In Chinese pastry shops they have them. Or in Japanese shops.
You can make them too, they’re light, fluffy and use cream of tartar (I think?) BF makes a killer cheesecake. It’s so light tasting, it disappears in seconds but packs a caloric punch.
Yum, now I need to eat macarons! Never had the French kind, only the coconut version from the States (where I live).
Fwiw, red velvet is usually a cocoa-based cake here. Most places use a lot of red food coloring to get the bright red color but upscale bakeries or those who want to avoid food coloring can get it with beetroot or a resemblance with just cocoa because of a reaction between the vinegar and buttermilk. Also, cream cheese icing is so much better than plain vanilla. Have you had that version?
The coconut version has an extra O in the name (macaroOns). Macarons with just one O is that shape of 2 cookies with ganache inside.
I was so confused at first when people told me to try it, I was imagining the coconut and cocoa patties until someone corrected me.
Oh… I see. I had no idea about red velvet cheesecake. Thanks for the clarification.
I have had the cream cheese icing version but not the plain vanilla. I’m one of those people that LOVES sweet cheese things.
Yummmmmm
I just looked up macaroon recipes yesterday, I am planning on making them this week.
