Alissa from The Corporate Chick asked me:
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Completely opposite of what you do now?
Hell to the yes.
When I was little, I wanted to be a:
- teacher
- ballerina
- something in marketing or advertising
Now, I’m an IT consultant. Go figure.
I’m just happy that I found what I like to do without a lot of soul searching for 30 years.
Oh so many ideas that never came to fruition – guide dog trainer, librarian, paleontologist, astronaut, novelist (although I still could do that one), English teacher, full time martial arts instructor (already doing it part-time!) and a New Age shop owner. ^_^
In spite of all that I spent years thinking 'I've no idea what I want to be', then my best mate said 'Why not try web design?' And the light bulb came on. Two and a half years later, I'm finally about to start my new job as a trainee web developer!!! Hooray!
I liked being a web design developer. It was a lot of fun to be technical and creative at the same time. Good luck!
I wanted to be a teacher, but then I became realistic about the "behind the scenes" work and decided against it!
I wanted to be –
1) a ballerina
2) a brain surgeon
3) a lawyer
4) a writer
I've almost achieved #3, and I'm aspiring to still be #4 one day. ๐
Daddy was an electrical engineer, so Daddy’s little girl wanted to be just like him.
I kind of have a one track mind, so EE I have become ๐
I wanted to be a cowgirl or an astronaut. Now I'm a graphic designer ๐
I wanted to be a teacher, a zookeeper, or a ventriloquist (saw one and thought they were cool)
When I was little I wanted to be a game ranger and ride on elephants and play with lion cubs. But then I grew up and became a travel consultant who sits in an office in front of a pc all day long
I wanted to be a ballerina, too! I think that's a pretty common idea for little girls. Too bad I have no coordination. ๐ I also wanted to be a librarian, which I supposed is not yet entirely out of the question. Though I'm in college and am still unsure as to where I'm going career-wise.
I had NO coordination for being a ballerina whatsoever.
I just thought that pink was the bomb, and I’d be able to go on my toes one day.
It wasn’t until I got older then I realized: “hey.. this sucks. I’m as graceful as an elephant!”
Teacher, then writer, then songwriter, but I was always good at maths and went that way. I'm now a programmer.
I wanted to be an accountant.
*hides face in shame*
I think I wanted to be a doctor. I had little doctors kits and whatnot ๐
I am a writer now, though.
I'm sure I wanted to be one of the preferred kid professions, teacher, doctor, nurse. When I was a little older (maybe 5th or 6th grade) I was really obsessed with marine mammals so I wanted to be a marine biologist or something of that nature. Or maybe an animal trainer?
My job now is along the lines of training but more in the realm of humans and not animals. Although I wouldn't mind training animals for a change of pace.
I wanted to be what I was around. When I was little I wanted to be a buyer because my Dad was a buyer. He was a clothing buyer at Target and I wanted to be a toy buyer. While my Mom was undergoing treatments that led to me having a baby sister, I was around the doctor's office with her a lot. I was the first two year old who told people he wanted to be a gynecologist.
In middle school I wanted to be an architect, but I found out that they work long hours and don't make all that much, so I decided on finance.
That is so cute!!
I wanted to be a supermodel :O) or an orthodontist
Lawyer, doctor (specially a pediatric oncologist – not even joking, this is what I wanted to be from around ages 10-15 or 16), teacher (English).
Now I'm working my Bachelors in Biology, but am a prospective nursing student from Sept 2010. =)
Author. Rockstar. Famous.
Wanted to be a doctor.
Went to school for biomedical science and then changed halfway though and decided to go into Art History. Definitely looking into combining the science and art to go into art restoration.
Right now I'm an Assistant Manager at a retail store. Opportunities have come up to move forward within the company that would have allowed me to travel around North America and then around the world to the international stores from there. I love the job and the company definitely keeping that option open when I'm done school this spring.
I wanted to be quite a few things, that varied as I grew older:
– teacher
– dancer
– actress
– roller coaster tester (by this I mean I wanted to go to amusement parks and rate how fun the rides were. My mom thought I meant I wanted to be an engineer…)
Now, I too work in an IT related field. Unanticipated, not what I went to school for (I went for English), but that's how life works.
Teacher is a common one I think. My mom was a teacher, so I felt the need to follow after her.
I’m actually not that bad at teaching or writing out ways to teach people, it’s just that patience is not really my biggest virtue.
But that little skill (whatever was left) came in handy when I went into IT and had to write training material.
Haha! I'm the same! I wanted to be a figure skater, a horseback rider or something in PR or marketing. I have a degree in PR with a minor in marketing and graphic design.
What do I do for a living? I ended up becoming an interactive specialist for a hospital. (meaning social media, coding and editing webpages) My dream job? No.
I kind of wish I was a photographer or a graphic designer…I could probably mess around coding a website now and again…This job isn't my dream, but it makes me happy for the most part. I think I like most things about my job, but when you start throwing in the "politcal" aspects of it, that makes it un-fun.
I used to work for a national chain of Craft Stores and everyone used to think that was "so cool" because I got to play with crafts and dream up covers of ads for the newspaper inserts. It was the worst job I've ever had and I quit.
When I was little I wanted to be a teacher, singer, baseball player, nuse and when a bit older, a lawyer. I ended up a clinical psychologist. As you aptly stated, go figure.
I wanted to be a mom! That’s all I wanted! I used to babysit and pretend the kids were mine. I also would redecorate the kids rooms (in my head) that was more to my liking.
Now, I don’t even want kids at all. Nor do I want to decorate any kids rooms.
.-= duddes02ยดs last blog ..Happy Birthday and Happy Valentines Day! =-.
I never dreamed about being a mother.
Never in a billion years… OH! I remember now, I wanted to be an interior designer for 3 months at one point.
My aspired careers: ballerina, model, actress, scientist, judge, journalist, musician.
The careers that I've actually worked in as an adult: ballerina ,model, substitute teacher, journalist/blogger/copywriter, editor, musician, event planner, bartender/retail/barista/call center rep [all of these were part-time side jobs].
My current career: copywriter/technical writer, with a part-time side job working in the box office of a regional theatre [I get free play tickets all the time, and they feed me too!], and an Etsy shop with a pretty steady side hustle of people asking me to knit things for them.
Whew. I work a lot. ๐
I wanted to be a fighter pilot. Asthma and nearsightedness kept me out of the Air Force. Now I'm getting ready to start graduate school for Audiology.
A teacher. I was so happy in school Am I boring, or what?
When I was little my mom had a 'child's progress book' for each year of life/school. At the bottom of each year was 'When I grow up I want to be.." The boys could choose from things like fireman, policeman and doctor". The girls could pick from "nurse, stewardness or teacher".
I wanted to be a lawyer, a teacher or a translator.
Mermaid (hey I was 6 and had been told I be anything I wanted to be)
Ballerina
Veterinarian
Those are pretty much par for the course for little girls I think.
What have I been since I grew up:
Server
Scientist
Student
Unemployed…
None of these to particularly like, I unfortunately needed the 30 (!) years of sole searching to figure out what I want to do….I think I've figured it out, now the trick is to get someone to hire me to do!
When I was little I wanted to be:
1. A tree
2. An electric guitar string
3. A doctor
and now I work in payroll. . .
i wanted to be a fashion designer all because of the best Christmas present ever ๐
http://www.thetoyshop.com/media/toyshop/products/…
kinda like this but it was from the early 90's
now…i work at a bank ugh!
I just wrote about
how I haven't really changed all that much since I was little. However, that is more about personality and likes/dislikes. When I was really little I wanted to be a bakery lady because they got to eat cookies all the time. I had (and still have!) a bit of a sweet tooth!
I really like this topics, especially since it's been on my mind recently. I'm still in college, majoring in business management. I was hoping to end up starting my own business or something. But I realized that I reallyyyyyy want to be a teacher. I love kids so much and I love seeing them learn.
Coincidentally, when I was younger I actually used to say I didn't want to be a teacher when I was in grade school because EVERYONE wanted to be one. I always said a singer or something along those lines.
Funny stuff ๐
Well sometimes you rebel against what you really want just for the sake of trying to be an individual.
I didn’t want to go into b-school just because my siblings went there, but in the end, I switched my mind and attended.
I wanted to be A LOT of things…
-a fashion designer
-a chef
-a caterer
-a writer
-an interior designer
-a pottery maker (yknow… like working at ikea and making sculptures and plates)
-a jewelry maker/designer
-a comedian
-a lawyer (but only because my parents wanted me to be one)
I really gravitated toward the arts. Now? Now I am an office drone. ~__~;
*feels all artistic personality sucked out slowly and inner childhood dying*
I wanted to be an interior designer at one point as well.
My artsy creative vibe comes out when I create flow charts ๐
