The Live Checking Card displays the accumulated spending amount on your card after every purchase. Clearly, the concept itself is nothing short of a nightmare for wives and girlfriends as it displays real time information of their shopping adventures. The underlying technology behind Live Checking Cards is e-ink, which checks your purchase history and matches them up with the bank account transactions using RFID.

I’m bristling at the remark about it being nothing short of a nightmare for wives and girlfriends, because men spend too!!!
Just single purchases on much bigger toys (cars, electronics, etc).
Nevertheless, I think it’s an interesting concept. I don’t see how it would help me, but maybe for those of you who are visual spenders and don’t want to keep a budget, this might be a good thing if it ever comes to fruition.
There is so much latent sexism in advertising that it kind of sickens me when I think about it. The Superbowl was bad, but this is awful (and the comments! What kind of website lets comments like that through????).
@amandalee: It's called "Blippy," and they show what you buy & how much you paid. I wrote a post on it in December.
I think this is cute and would be a fun "proof" of frugality ๐
I think having that number on your card would be brilliant. For years I've had an automatic transfer to pay off my credit card in full. I used it for everything – gas, groceries, etc., no problem. For some reason, perhaps just being extra cautious, I switched to using my debit card (which I understand is a nightmare in the US, but doesn't seem to be the same problem here in the UK) for these day to day expenses and eventually forgot my PIN for the credit card! But, I gather, one's credit rating depends on using one's credit, so I was thinking I needed to keep using the credit card even if I do pay it off. Given that my bank account is so much (about 80%) smaller than it used to be and I try not to carry surplus but put it to work getting better interest, I need to be pretty on top of what the number would be on my credit card to make sure I could still make that automatic payment.
I don't think they'll develop it, personally. I think the credit card companies would prefer you not to think about such trivial things as how much debt you are in…. cynical, I know.
FB, this reminds me of that service that livestreams your credit/debit card purchases – have you heard about this?? I'll try to find a link.
I don't use a credit card anymore, but I think this would be really helpful if I did. Is it resettable – ie, can you reset it each month to reflect monthly spending; spending during a particular date range, etc?
Nice post. Keep it up. ๐
Oh really? I haven’t heard of that service.
NO idea ๐ Totally conceptual, but I think it’d be great if you could click something and just reset it?
Personally I just track all my receipts because I need to see actual categories.. so this wouldn’t be useful for me, but it’s an interesting concept.
